How we chose the best dehumidifier in Australia

Review sites – including this one – are subjective by nature. Everybody has a different opinion of what is best.

So to try and counter the fact that every best guide on the internet has a different opinion of what is best, we approached our list by combining the results of some of the top sites recommending dehumidifiers on the market today.

To determine this list, we followed the same journey most consumers would follow: we went to Google.

We searched for “Best dehumidifiers” and identified 5 of the top results. It’s important to note that Google results can change often. The full list of sites we referenced is outlined below:

Top ranking sites

We listed out all of the dehumidifiers listed on each site, tidying up any slight differences in spelling for consistency.

We then calculated the frequency in which each product was mentioned across those five guides. The more frequently a product is mentioned, the more agreement there is between experts reviewing these products that it is, indeed one of the best products available.

We set a minimum of two mentions across all eight guides to be eligible for inclusion in our guide to the best dehumidifier in Australia.

Before we created this page we took some time to remove products that are either unavailable, or difficult to find in Australia.

We also leveraged our own experience with products to ensure that we wouldn’t be recommending any product that doesn’t deliver.

Guide to buying the best dehumidifier in Australia

The Breville Smart Dry Plus Connect is one of the best dehumidifiers in Australia right now

Whether you want to buy one of the products featured above or something different, these are the things to look for when choosing a dehumidifier.

Dehumidifying technology

There are a few different technologies in dehumidifiers, but the two main types of dehumidifiers are Desiccant or Compressor.

Compressor dehumidifiers

Compressor dehumidifiers work by dehumidifiers work by using a compressor and refrigerant to cool the air, which causes moisture to condense and collect in a water tank.

They are the most popular type of dehumidifiers and can remove large amounts of moisture from the air quickly. They are suitable for use in large rooms and high humidity areas.

Desiccant dehumidifiers

These models use a desiccant material, such as silica gel, to absorb moisture from the air. The moisture is then collected in a water tank or expelled through a hose.

These units are quieter than refrigerant-based dehumidifiers and are ideal for small rooms and low humidity areas.

Size and Capacity

Understanding the size of the room you want to dehumidify is essential.

A unit that is too small will not be able to remove enough moisture from the air, while a unit that is too large will be wasteful and inefficient.

Capacity is measured in the number of litres the dehumidifier can remove from the air per day.

To determine the appropriate capacity for your room, you can use the following guidelines:

CapacityRoom size
12 LitresUp to 20m²
16 LitresUp to 25m²
20 LitresUp to 30m²
25 LitresUp to 38m²
35 LitresUp to 50m²
50 LitresUp to 105m²

Humidity control

The best dehumidifiers in Australia will have a built-in humidistat, which allows you to set the desired humidity level in the room.

When the humidity reaches the set level, the dehumidifier will shut off automatically to conserve energy and prevent over-drying the air.

Some models also have a continuous drainage option that allows the unit to drain directly into a sink or drain.

If it doesn’t, check the size of the model’s water tank, as you will need to empty it regularly.

Noise levels

Dehumidifiers can be noisy, so it’s important to choose a model that operates quietly, especially if you plan to use it in a bedroom or other quiet space. Look for units with a low decibel (dB) rating, preferably below 50 dB.

Additional Features

Some dehumidifiers have additional features that can improve air quality and make the unit more convenient to use. These features include:

  • Automatic shut-off: The unit will turn off when the water tank is full to prevent overflow.
  • Digital controls: Allows you to easily adjust the settings, such as humidity level and fan speed.
  • Wheels and handles: Makes it easier to move the unit from room to room.
  • Air filters: Can trap dust, pollen, and other allergens, improving air quality.
  • Ionisers: Can help eliminate unpleasant odours and bacteria from the air.
  • Laundry mode: A dedicated mode on some models that allow you to efficiently dry clothes indoors

Price

Expect to pay upwards of $150 for a good quality dehumidifier, though larger premium models could cost closer to $1,000.

There are also more permanent options which need to be professionally installed, which could cost even more, but may be useful in wetter areas.
