Vodafone offers a range of prepaid and postpaid mobile plans in Australia. But which is best?

I’ve compared Vodafone’s prepaid plans previously, but what if you aren’t decided whether you want to pay up front? Vodafone’s postpaid SIM-only plans cost more per day, but they have their own benefits.

For example, Vodafone’s impressive $5 a day global roaming gives you access to your mobile plan’s inclusions for just $5 a day in over 100 countries. It is only available on post-paid plans.

To accurately compare prepaid and postpaid plans, you need to use their features to determine their real value. Unless you plan to travel internationally, that can make it hard.

Because of this, I’ve decided to rank Vodafone’s plans based purely on price and data.

I dumped a heap of information into a spreadsheet and created some formulas. It’s the same sheet I used to map out the best mobile plans in Australia. I’ll break down how it works below.

Disclaimer

This “best guide” is a point in time analysis of Vodafone’s prepaid and postpaid SIM-only mobile plans. I don’t have the resources to update it every day. I will come back and try to update it frequently, but there is a good chance Vodafone will change its plans and then this page will become outdated.

You should always check details closely, and make your own decisions. The method below is how I determined what I thought was best, but you can do the same analysis to find what’s right for you.

Vodafone’s $45 SIM-only plan offers 40GB of data each month and operates on the Vodafone network in Australia, providing access to 5G speeds. However, the plan does not include international calls.

How we chose the best Vodafone mobile plans

Whether you opt for a prepaid or postpaid plan, you are paying for access to a mobile network, with a set of inclusions over a set period of time. In the case of prepaid, that is the expiry period, and for postpaid it’s per month.

The inclusions you get come in the form of calls, texts, and data. There are variations, of course, but every plan offers some level of those three.

To determine the best Vodafone mobile plan, we analysed all of Vodafone’s SIM plans – both prepaid and postpaid – and looked at the amount of data and price for each plan. All of Vodafone’s plans include unlimited standard calls in Australia, so we didn’t factor that in.

There are some fundamental differences between prepaid and postpaid. Because it’s hard to categorically define value for things like International calls or global roaming – which are only valuable if you use them, we decided to rate these plans purely on data and price.

The data analysis

Once we had all the data in a spreadsheet, we broke down the price and data numbers to calculate a “cost per day” figure and a “data per day” figure.

We then calculated the equivalent values if you were to remain on the plan for a 12-month period. This allows us to factor in bonus offerings, without letting them skew the data.

To determine the final ranking of what was best, we applied a weighting to each component’s rank, where 60% was assigned to price per day, and 40% to data per day. We combined these to arrive at a final ranking score.

Vodafone prepaid vs Vodafone postpaid

The biggest difference between prepaid and postpaid plans is when you pay. Prepaid plans require you to pay before you use your inclusions, whereas postpaid will send you an invoice at the end of the month.

But for Vodafone, there are additional differences between the plan types that could help sway your decision between them.

Speed throttling

It wasn’t that long ago that telcos would rack up huge profits by charging exorbitant excess data usage fees.

Vodafone doesn’t do that. Regardless of whether you are on a prepaid or postpaid plan, Vodafone will slow down your data access once you’ve used your monthly data allowance.

What is different is the speed it throttles you to. Vodafone throttles prepaid plans to 1.5 Mbps and postpaid plans to 2 Mbps.

Clearly that makes postpaid slightly more attractive, though you probably wouldn’t notice the difference in the real world.

Save with automatic recharge

You can save $5 per recharge if you opt for a prepaid plan and enable auto-recharge.

That could make a significant impact on the value calculations we’ve done for this guide and make prepaid plans even more appealing.

Terms and conditions do apply, though.

Buy now pay later

When you buy a prepaid starter pack from Vodafone online worth $30 or more, you can use PayPal’s Pay in 4 to make the purchase more affordable.

It’s going to be more useful for long expiry plans with a large upfront cost, but being able to pay the price in four payments without any interest is a nice convenience.

Network satisfaction guarantee

About a decade ago, Vodafone had a lot of network issues that made it difficult to recommend. To its credit, the company invested significantly in its network, and now offers the Network Satisfaction Guarantee.

For postpaid plans, if you don’t love the network, you can cancel the plan within 30 days. It’s a nice safety net that makes it easier to switch to the network.

$5 per day global roaming

Vodafone changed the face of global roaming when it introduced its $5 a day roaming offer. If you travel overseas frequently, being able to pay just $5 a day to access your regular mobile inclusions while overseas is hard to beat. The only viable alternative is buying a local SIM when you arrive at your destination.

The roaming works in over 100 countries, and you can see the full list over on the Vodafone site.

Naturally, there are a few conditions to using the $5/day roaming. It only includes your plan’s data, not excess throttled data. They charge excess data at $5/GB.

You can also only use $5 roaming for a maximum of 90 days per calendar year.

But it is a strong case for signing up to a postpaid plan if you need to travel overseas often.
