What to think about when choosing gift cards
Believe it or not, there are a few different things to consider when choosing a gift card as a present.
Budget
How much are you willing to spend? Some cards have pre-defined values, while others can be set when you buy them.
If a gift card’s worth is pre-defined, are you happy spending that much to buy it?
The card’s expiry date
Retailers love gift cards because it’s free money without up front cost. A survey from comparison site Finder in January 2022 found that 24% of Australians had let their gift cards expire.
With this in mind, it’s important to make sure any gift card you buy has a long shelf life. It’s also worth avoiding stores that could possibly go out of business.
The recipient’s interests
This one is pretty obvious, but don’t get someone who hates sport a gift card for a sport store. Even though it’s not a present for them to unwrap, it is still a gift, so approach it in the same way.
Consider their interests, likes and passions and try and find an appropriate store. If that fails, consider a larger retailer or department store like Amazon that sells a wide range of products.
When to buy
Don’t just buy a gift card at the last minute if you can help it. If you shop around, you will find many retailers actually discount gift cards.
That means you could buy someone a $50 gift card, but only pay $45 for it.
