Sony has today lifted the lid on its next pair of iconic noise cancelling earbuds, the WF-1000XM5.

Take a quick glance at our roundups for the best wireless earbuds, the best earphones, and best noise cancelling headphones, and you’ll see the Sony WF-1000XM4 true wireless earbuds from Sony appear prominently.

Set to arrive in Australia from August, the XM5 earbuds promise to deliver even superior performance over the already ridiculously well-regarded XM4 earbuds.

At the core of the announcement for the WF-1000XM5 are improvements to the noise cancellation, even better audio quality, and the best call quality Sony has ever delivered.

The earbuds are smaller and lighter than the XM4 earbuds, yet still promise up to eight hours of battery life and 60 minutes of playback off a three minute charge.

Packed into each of these earbuds are three high-quality microphones, including dual-feedback mics, which allows the XM5 to really cancel out low-frequency sounds.

A combination of audio processors: The Integrated Processor V2 and the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN2e, combine to control all six microphones and adapt to incoming sound in real-time, creating what Sony is describing its best-ever noise cancelling performance.

WF-1000XM5 improved audio quality

In addition to the processors and microphones, Sony has created the new Dynamic Driver X for reproducing a wide frequency range, from deep bass to high, detailed vocals.

The diaphragm structure of the Dynamic Driver X helps minimise any distortion.

But while the speakers promise to do a fantastic job, the processors also help create a high resolution audio experience. The WF-1000XM5 offers 24-bit audio processing, High-Res Audio wireless using LDAC and the ability to upscale digital music in real time.

Head tracking technology works to create an immersive 360-degree audio experience, giving you the best seat in the house when it comes to music, and a true surround experience when watching content on your phone.

WF-1000XM5 call quality upgrades

Interesting, Sony went out of its way to call out the improvements to call quality in its announcement.

Bone-conducting sensors, a wind-noise reducing structure and an AI-based noise reduction algorithm help make sure you’re heard in every conversation.

WF-1000XM4 pricing and availability

It’s pretty much guaranteed that these earbuds are going to shoot to the top of all the best guides once reviews start rolling in.

Until then though, know that the WF-1000XM5 earbuds are destined to land in Australia from August for an RRP of $499.95. They will be available in both black and silver versions, and if you can’t wait, you can pre-order a pair from today.
